Engineer - Engines (FD)
Chennai, Chennai-MRV(FD), IN
Responsibilities & Key Deliverables
As an Engineer - Engines (FD) within our Product Development team, your primary responsibility will be conducting finite element modelling (FEM) of engine and transmission components and systems to support the Farm Division's product development efforts. This involves detailed analysis and simulation using state-of-the-art tools to ensure the strength, durability, and performance of powertrain components under various operating conditions.
Your key deliverables will include:
- Performing finite element analysis (FEA) on engine 5C's (Cylinder head, Crankcase, Crankshaft, Connecting rod, Camshaft) and transmission housings focusing on nonlinear static strength, fatigue life, modal, and frequency response.
- Applying advanced skills in Abaqus to assign material properties, establish connections, joints, and contact definitions essential for accurate simulations.
- Setting up and running linear and nonlinear static analyses, including applying realistic loads and boundary conditions reflective of operational scenarios.
- Post-processing simulation outputs to generate comprehensive reports that offer actionable insights and recommend design modifications.
- Collaborating closely with cross-functional design and product teams to validate analysis results and guide development decisions aimed at enhancing product reliability and meeting quality benchmarks.
- Ensuring strict adherence to element and part quality check sheets and process standards to guarantee the integrity and compliance of analyses performed.
- Staying updated on the latest engineering principles, automotive systems, and analysis methodologies relevant to powertrain components.
- Understanding and analysing cranktrain and valvetrain dynamics for system-level performance optimisation.
This role demands a meticulous approach combined with practical engineering judgement to support innovation within automotive powertrain systems while delivering excellence in simulation accuracy and actionable reporting.
Experience
The ideal candidate brings 6 to 8 years of proven experience in the automotive industry, specialising in finite element analysis and powertrain engineering. Your expertise should encompass a strong track record in performing detailed simulations and structural analyses of engine and transmission components using diverse industry-standard CAE tools.
Specifically, you should have:
- Proficiency in meshing software such as Hypermesh and SIMULIA SimLab, enabling the creation of high-quality finite element models that balance accuracy with computational efficiency.
- Experience in operating leading solvers including Nastran, Abaqus, and Ansys to execute complex static, dynamic, and fatigue analyses on automotive components.
- Familiarity with post-processing applications like HyperView, allowing you to interpret simulation outcomes effectively and communicate them clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Competence using AVL Excite and Timing Drive software to analyse and simulate powertrain dynamics, contributing to system-level performance assessments.
- Knowledge of FEMFAT or equivalent fatigue analysis tools for predicting component life and ensuring durability under cyclic loading conditions.
Your background should demonstrate an ability to integrate simulation results into practical engineering insights, supporting design validation and continuous improvement within a fast-paced automotive development environment.
