Responsibilities & Key Deliverables
As an Engineer in Materials Technology at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, you will play a critical role in shaping the performance and manufacturing quality of Power Train System Components. Your responsibilities will include:
- Selecting appropriate material manufacturing methods that achieve optimal performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost-efficiency targets, including weight considerations.
- Executing thorough failure analysis to identify root causes and recommend effective corrective actions to improve product durability and quality.
- Supporting engine and transmission development programs by actively participating in supplier evaluation audits to ensure compliance with technical and quality standards.
- Collaborating proactively during the early design phases to advise engineering teams on material process options and conducting trade-off studies to determine the best solutions.
- Maintaining and updating comprehensive material property data, encompassing variations and endurance strength, to facilitate accurate engineering analyses in design processes.
- Regularly revising material specification guidelines to align with evolving industry standards and internal quality benchmarks.
- Identifying and driving continuous improvement initiatives focused on potential cost reductions and value engineering across forging, casting, powder metallurgy, and aluminum heat-treated components.
Experience
We are seeking candidates with 2 to 3 years of professional experience in metallurgy or materials engineering, ideally within the automotive or heavy manufacturing sectors. Experience working on powertrain systems or related components is highly valued. Candidates should have practical knowledge in material selection, failure mode analysis, supplier audits, and manufacturing process optimization. Familiarity with metallurgical testing methods and standards, along with proficiency in interpreting material behavior under different operational stresses, will enhance effectiveness in this role. Exposure to value engineering initiatives and cost-reduction strategies specific to metal components manufacturing will be considered a strong advantage.

Industry Preferred
Preferred industry backgrounds include automotive manufacturing, heavy engineering, powertrain component production, aerospace materials development, or industrial metallurgy sectors. Candidates who have contributed to product development projects in companies specializing in forging, casting, powder metallurgy, or aluminum heat treatments will find their expertise particularly relevant. Experience with tier-1 or tier-2 automotive suppliers, or companies focusing on engine and transmission systems, is highly desirable. Knowledge of material specifications and standards applicable to automotive powertrain components will enable smooth integration into the team and projects.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a closely related engineering field (B.E./B.Tech). Advanced qualifications or certifications in materials engineering, failure analysis, or manufacturing processes are advantageous but not mandatory. Demonstrated proficiency in material characterization techniques and standards, alongside a solid understanding of manufacturing methods such as forging, casting, powder metallurgy, and aluminum heat treatment processes, is required. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential to articulate technical findings and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Candidates should be comfortable using engineering analysis software and maintaining detailed technical documentation ensuring quality and compliance.
