Lead Engineer - Engines FD

Date:  10 Mar 2026
Location:

Chennai, Chennai-MRV(FD), IN

Company:  Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd

Responsibilities & Key Deliverables

As a Lead Engineer specialising in engine design within our Product Development division, you will spearhead the design and development of critical powertrain components including crankshafts, connecting rods, and pistons. Your expertise will extend to valvetrain elements such as camshafts, tappets, valves, and valve springs. You will also design ancillary mechanisms including belt drives, brackets, pulleys, and key structural components like crankcases and cylinder heads.

Your responsibilities encompass detailed design calculations to ensure optimal performance and durability of powertrain, valvetrain, and structural components. You will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) standards and leverage advanced CAD tools such as UG NX for modelling and Teamcenter for drawing release and engineering change management.

Critical to the role is a deep understanding of manufacturing processes including casting, forging, and sheet metal fabrication. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as Quality Assurance, Assembly, and Sourcing to ensure design feasibility, manufacturability, and adherence to production timelines.

Furthermore, you will oversee and review 3D/2D drawings and validate tolerance stack-ups to ensure precision in assembly and performance standards. Hands-on involvement in exhaust after-treatment system design and engine assembly process optimization is also required. Leading and mentoring a team of design engineers to foster innovation and maintain high engineering standards will be part of your key deliverables.

Experience

The ideal candidate will possess 8 to 12 years of progressive experience in automotive engine design and development, with a solid track record of delivering robust and manufacturable powertrain solutions.

Experience should include:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of powertrain and valvetrain component design.
  • Hands-on expertise in CAD modelling using UG NX or equivalent software.
  • Proficient in engineering drawing standards, GD&T, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience managing product lifecycle through Teamcenter or similar PLM tools.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, and sheet metal production.
  • Previous leadership experience guiding multifunctional teams in engineering design environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with quality, assembly, and sourcing departments.
  • Understanding of engine assembly processes and emissions after-treatment design principles.

Experience in designing for off-highway engines or working within automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier-1 suppliers is highly desirable.

Industry Preferred

Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience working within the following industries:

  • Automotive manufacturing, particularly in engine design and development.
  • Off-highway and agricultural engine sectors supporting farm equipment divisions.
  • First-tier suppliers to the automotive industry focusing on powertrain components.
  • Automotive design consultancies specialising in powertrain and engine engineering such as AVL, Bosch, and similar organisations.

Experience within companies renowned for innovation and engineering excellence in powertrain solutions including but not limited to Ashok Leyland, Simpson, Tata Motors, Eicher Motors, Daimler AG, and Sonalika is highly advantageous.

Qualifications

The position requires candidates to possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or closely related fields.

Educational qualifications should encompass a solid foundation in mechanical design principles, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science applicable to engine component design and manufacturing.

Additional certifications or training in advanced CAD software (preferably UG NX), GD&T, and product lifecycle management tools such as Teamcenter will be considered advantageous.

Continuous professional development and participation in relevant technical workshops and seminars aimed at enhancing skills in engine design, advanced manufacturing techniques, and emissions systems are encouraged.

General Requirements

General requirements for this role include:

  • Proven capability to review and approve detailed 3D and 2D engineering drawings ensuring compliance with GD&T and tolerance stack-up norms.
  • Strong understanding of exhaust after-treatment system designs related to engine emissions control.
  • Familiarity with engineering change notices (ECN) and drawing release processes within PLM environments such as Teamcenter.
  • Experience in overseeing engine assembly processes to align design characteristics with manufacturability and quality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting, coordinating with teams across quality, assembly, sourcing, and other functional areas.
  • Leadership experience managing a team of design professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Competence in 3D CAD modelling and simulation tools including FEA, CFD, and CAE to support design validation and optimisation.
  • Effective communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts clearly across teams and stakeholders.
