Responsibilities & Key Deliverables
As a Senior Engineer in the Materials Technology department at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, you will play a pivotal role in the development and application of advanced elastomeric materials within automotive components. Your responsibilities will encompass:
- Applying in-depth expertise in elastomeric materials tailored for automotive applications, including engine mounts, suspension systems, cooling system hoses, tires, and weathering seals.
- Leading the design and stack-up calculations of elastomeric components to ensure structural integrity and performance.
- Utilizing materials characterization techniques such as FTIR, TGA, DSC, DMA, and GCMS to analyze and optimize material properties.
- Overseeing rigorous endurance testing methods including RLDA, and conducting both destructive and non-destructive testing in alignment with ASTM and SAE standards.
- Managing and interpreting quality and reliability tools such as Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Design Verification Plans (DVP), Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Control Plans (CP), and Work Instructions (WI).
- Employing problem-solving methodologies including 8D problem solving to address and resolve material and component issues promptly.
- Possessing knowledge of perceived quality measures and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) in both 2D and 3D modeling platforms, including CATIA software.
- Ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory standards such as REACH, and contributing to sustainability initiatives within material selection and product development.
- Coordinating with suppliers to assess manufacturing feasibility, drive process improvements, and initiate new supplier evaluations and process audits.
- Conducting competitive benchmarking of products and technologies to maintain and enhance technological advantage.
Your expertise will be instrumental in driving product excellence, fostering supplier partnerships, and advancing Mahindra’s position as a leader in automotive materials technology.
Experience
The ideal candidate should bring between 4 to 9 years of substantial hands-on experience in the development of elastomeric components within an automotive context. This experience should include a strong track record in material selection, characterization, testing, and component design tailored to meet rigorous automotive standards. Candidates will have demonstrated their capability to lead projects from concept through to successful implementation, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and suppliers. Experience in utilizing advanced testing methods and failure analysis, as well as application of problem-solving tools within a quality-driven environment, is highly valued.
Industry Preferred
Preferred candidates will have backgrounds grounded in the automotive industry, particularly within Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) or Tier 1 automotive component manufacturers. Familiarity with the automotive supply chain, standards, and product development processes in these sectors is essential to effectively navigate the complexities of automotive elastomeric component manufacturing and validation.
Qualifications
Qualifications for this role include undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in Polymer Engineering, Rubber Technology, or Plastic Engineering disciplines. Academic preparation should provide a robust foundation in material science with a focus on elastomeric materials, complemented by practical exposure to automotive applications. Additional certifications or training related to material testing, quality management, and automotive standards will be advantageous.
