Responsibilities & Key Deliverables
The candidate will be tasked with leading a team of dedicated Metallurgical Engineers, focusing on critical aspects that drive the success of vehicle systems. Key responsibilities include:
- Finalising materials and manufacturing methods for all vehicle components, including Body-in-White (BIW), chassis, suspension systems, and fasteners. This is crucial to meeting key performance metrics regarding reliability, manufacturability, repairability, cost, and weight.
- Delivering technical expertise in failure analysis related to sheet metal forming, welding, and corrosion. Effectively identifying root causes and proposing suitable corrective actions is paramount.
- Assisting in vehicle system development programmes, including thorough supplier evaluations and audits, especially in areas such as chassis and suspension springs, knuckles, and wheel end components.
- Engaging proactively in the early design phases to guide design engineers with informed materials and process recommendations, accompanied by necessary trade-off studies.
- Creating and updating material property databases, particularly regarding variations and endurance strengths, to aid in engineering design analysis.
- Proactively revising material specifications and guidelines to align with current global standards, ensuring continued compliance and competitiveness.
- Developing strong relationships with material testing agencies—both domestically and internationally—to facilitate specific tests supportive of ongoing projects and programmes.
- Driving the integration of new technologies across materials, processes, and coatings to elevate performance standards.
- Continuously identifying potential value engineering proposals and cost reduction activities, particularly in areas like forging, casting, powder metallurgy, and heat treated components.
Experience
Candidates should possess between 4 to 6 years of relevant experience in metallurgical engineering. It is essential that they have hands-on experience with processes such as:
- Sheet metal forming
- Stamping
- Welding
- Corrosion resistance techniques
- Fastening methods
- Heat treatment processes
- Coatings and metallurgical testing
Experience with castings and forgings will be viewed favourably, enhancing the candidate's profile.
