Sr Engineer - NVH
Chennai, Chennai-MRV-AD, IN
Responsibilities & Key Deliverables
As an Engineer specialising in NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) within our Product Development division, you will lead simulation and analysis at the powertrain level. Your core responsibility includes executing Engine Vehicle Design Validation Plans (VDVPs) through sophisticated AVL Excite software, striving to meet stringent NVH targets related to engine 1-meter noise and torsional vibrations. You will advise on design modifications and provide engineering insights that influence engine componentry to enhance NVH outcomes.
In this role, you will develop comprehensive design guidelines to be integrated at the CAD stage in collaboration with the design team, embedding NVH considerations early on. Active participation in cross-functional team (CFT) meetings is expected to identify and communicate NVH risks to relevant project engineering heads, ensuring proactive mitigation strategies. Close coordination with NVH testing teams will facilitate accelerated development cycles and enhance feedback integration.
Key deliverables include:
- Detailed NVH simulation and model validation using AVL Excite Powerunit software for high-frequency analysis.
- Preparation and dissemination of design documentation that supports NVH optimization.
- Collaboration with durability and testing teams for holistic powertrain assessments.
- Continuous monitoring and achievement of NVH targets through data-driven analysis and recommendations.
Experience
The ideal candidate will have gained significant experience in NVH domains supporting powertrain development projects. Typically, candidates with an M.Tech degree will possess 2-3 years of focused experience, whereas those holding a B.Tech would have accrued 4-5 years.
Essential experience areas include:
- Proficient understanding of engine noise and vibration diagnostics, including advanced techniques such as Transfer Path Analysis (TPA), Operating Deflection Shapes (ODS), and Modal Analysis.
- Hands-on expertise with NVH measurement systems, particularly LMS Test.Lab and B&K equipment, ensuring accurate data capture and interpretation.
- A solid foundation in the physics of structure-borne and airborne noise sources linked to powertrain components, coupled with knowledge of effective noise mitigation strategies.
- Practical experience deploying AVL Excite software to model and simulate engine component vibrations and noise profiles.
Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and communicate technical findings effectively within multidisciplinary teams will enhance candidate suitability.
Industry Preferred
The preferred industry background for this position is within the Tractor and Agricultural Machinery sector. Candidates with experience in organisations focused on heavy-duty powertrains and off-highway engines, where robust NVH management is critical to product success, will find their expertise well-aligned.
This encompasses involvement in companies delivering tractor manufacturing, heavy commercial vehicles, and allied automotive sectors where compliance with stringent NVH standards is paramount to operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology (BE/B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Educational credentials should be from recognised institutions, evidencing a strong foundation in automotive engineering principles and vibration analysis.
Possession of advanced certifications or training in NVH methodologies, computer-aided engineering tools (CAE), and simulation software like AVL Excite will significantly strengthen candidacy.
A commitment to continuous professional development and familiarity with the latest NVH trends and standards is highly desirable to maintain technical proficiency in this dynamic field.
