Sr. Engineer - Engines FD

Date:  10 Mar 2026
Location:

Chennai, Chennai-MRV(FD), IN

Company:  Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd

Responsibilities & Key Deliverables

As a Senior Engineer in the Engines Farm Division, you will take ownership of designing critical components within powertrain and valvetrain systems, including crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons, camshafts, tappets, valves, valve springs, belt drives, brackets, pulleys, crankcases, and cylinder heads. You will perform comprehensive design calculations to ensure component reliability and optimal performance under various operating conditions.

Your role includes the application of advanced Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles, proficient use of UG NX software for 3D modelling and simulation, and effective management of drawing releases through Teamcenter PLM systems. A thorough understanding of manufacturing processes such as casting, sheet metal fabrication, and forging is essential to design components that balance manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and durability.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality assurance, and product development to iterate designs based on feedback and testing outcomes. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and emerging technologies within engine design will be pivotal in driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Additional responsibilities include supporting engine assembly process optimizations, leading engineering change notifications (ECNs), and ensuring compliance with emission treatment design requirements, particularly exhaust after-treatment systems, to meet regulatory and environmental standards.

Experience

The ideal candidate will possess 5 to 8 years of hands-on experience in engine component design within the automotive or related sectors. Prior involvement with design and development of powertrain and valvetrain parts is essential. Experience should include demonstrating proficiency in CAD tools, especially UG NX, as well as experience managing engineering data through Teamcenter or equivalent product lifecycle management software.

Applicants should have a proven track record of working closely with manufacturing teams to translate design intent into production-ready components, showcasing expertise in casting, forging, and sheet metal processes. Knowledge of engine assembly procedures and interaction with exhaust after-treatment systems will be highly advantageous.

Experience gained from roles within OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) or tier-1 suppliers, particularly those specialising in automotive engines, off-highway engines, or farm machinery engines, will be considered highly relevant. Strong problem-solving skills, coupled with the ability to navigate complex engineering challenges within multidisciplinary teams, are expected.

Industry Preferred

We prefer candidates who have worked within the following industries:

  • Automobile manufacturing companies specializing in engine development.
  • FIE (First India Engine) suppliers or equivalent automotive component suppliers.
  • Off-highway engine manufacturers, including those serving agricultural and construction equipment sectors.
  • Consulting firms or design houses engaged in powertrain engineering.

Experience within companies prioritising advanced engine design, emission compliance, and innovative powertrain solutions will be particularly valued. Exposure to stringent quality standards and certification processes within these industries is beneficial.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology (BE/B.Tech) degree, or a Master of Engineering or Master of Technology (ME/M.Tech) degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Academic qualifications should demonstrate a strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and machine component design. Additional certifications or training related to CAD tools (especially UG NX), GD&T standards, and product lifecycle management are advantageous.

The successful candidate should also be committed to continuous professional development, keeping up with evolving technologies and industry best practices through workshops, seminars, and relevant technical publications.

General Requirements

General requirements for this role include a solid understanding of exhaust after-treatment design principles, ensuring that engine components integrate effectively within the broader emission control systems. Familiarity with Teamcenter for drawing release management and engineering change notifications (ECN) is essential.

Applicants should have a practical grasp of engine assembly processes, enabling collaboration with production teams to optimize assembly efficiency, quality, and performance validation. Strong communication skills are required to liaise effectively with interdisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.

Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a proactive approach to identifying and solving design challenges are critical attributes for success. Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects while adhering to timelines and quality standards is expected.
