Position: Deputy Manager - Design & Engineering (Mechanical)

Overview

The Deputy Manager - Design & Engineering will be responsible for the design, development, and engineering execution of naval defense systems and equipment from concept to testing and final delivery. The incumbent shall be responsible for engineering activities including requirement analysis, concept design, detailed design, engineering hand calculations, manufacturing drawings, PLM change management, vendor coordination, and support during manufacturing and assembly.

The role requires strong technical expertise in mechanical system design, proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, and the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure successful project execution.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

  • Understand customer specifications, technical requirements, standards, and contractual documents.
  • Concept development, detailed design, and design optimization of mechanical systems and structural assemblies based on customer requirements.
  • Hands-on experience in designing sheet metal components, cabinets, consoles, and equipment enclosures for defense or industrial applications
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor) and AutoCAD for product design, development, and engineering documentation.
  • Prepare design calculations for structural, mechanical, and system-level designs.
  • Prepare and review detailed manufacturing, assembly, and General Arrangement (GA) drawings using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD
  • Ensure proper application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5), tolerance stack-up analysis, DFM/DFA principles, engineering drawing standards (ASME Y14 Series), material and manufacturing standards, and applicable defense, naval, and industry codes and standards.
  • Possess sound knowledge of material selection standards, welding standards, manufacturing processes, and structural design guidelines
  • Create and maintain Engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs) and manage engineering data, revisions, and change requests through Teamcenter/PLM systems.
  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other design validation activities.
  • Coordinate with vendors for selection and finalization of bought-out items and subsystem components.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant defense, naval, classification society, and industry standards.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of the design process, including specifications, test results, and iterations.

Testing & Validation

  • Prepare ATPs, VCRM and associated technical documentation.
  • Support factory acceptance tests (FAT), qualification tests, site trials etc.

Cross Functional Coordination

  • Provide engineering support for manufacturing, assembly, integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, customer discussions, and project reviews.
  • Ensure timely closure of technical queries and project deliverables.

Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering.

Experience

  • 6 to 10 years of experience in design and development of mechanical systems, defense equipment, or engineered products.
  • Experience in Naval Defence, Defence Equipment, Marine Systems, or Special Purpose Systems.
  • Experience handling complete product lifecycle from concept design through testing and delivery.

Preferred Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience in designing and developing naval/defense equipment or complex engineered products and should be capable of managing engineering activities from requirement analysis, concept development, detailed design, Teamcenter change management, manufacturing support, assembly integration, and testing support while mentoring CAD engineers and coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
